Print Finishing Equipment: A Buyer's Guide

Cutters, laminators and application tables -- what finishes a large format job properly, and which piece of kit does which job.

Printing the job is half the work. Cutting, laminating and finishing it properly is what makes it ready to install or hand over.

Vinyl roll cutters

Roll cutters use tangential or drag-knife cutting, in sizes from compact desktop units up to large production models -- so there's a size that matches your throughput rather than the other way round. If you're deciding between drag-knife and tangential cutting for your own jobs, the right one depends on the material and the detail in the cut.

Flatbed cutters

For rigid materials, a flatbed cutter handles signage, display panels, samples and packaging in one pass -- useful if your work moves between roll and rigid substrates.

Laminators

Hot and cold roll-to-roll laminators protect and finish your prints. Hot lamination gives a more durable, heat-sealed finish for vehicle wraps and outdoor graphics; cold lamination suits heat-sensitive media and a faster turnaround.

Application tables

Application tables handle lamination and mounting for rigid panels and boards that need even pressure across the whole surface.

Folding machines

Folding systems take care of precision folding for technical drawings and documents, so plans come off the printer ready to file or hand over.
